| Title: A Complete
Descriptive Guide to British Monumental Brasses Author: Richard le Strange Date published: 1972 Status: out of print What is it? A brass-spotter's checklist - every single monumental brass in England, organised alphabetically by place within county. What's it like? UFFORD 1488 Symon Brooke, c.d. (upper hf miss). 1st w. Emot, c.d. 2nd w. Margt., c.d. 3rd w. Alice, c.d. 1598 Rich. Ballett, goldsmith, skeleton on tomb, rect. pl. What's good about it? It's exhaustive - it must have taken years to compile. It's easy to use, once you get the hang of the abbreviations. It's really good for checking you haven't missed anything. Although long out of print, it is easily available and generally very cheap. What's bad about it? Dry as dust. Also, if you are exploring Suffolk, there are better guides which include background information and even pictures. The same must be true of other counties. This is really just a checklist. Overall rating: 3/5 Buy this book: Amazon.co.uk (UK and Europe), Amazon.com (rest of the world) |
