Reconciliation

Reconciliation: Perhaps the most delightful of the eight panels. The priest and penitent sit in the shriving pew (confessionals are a post-medieval invention), and at the Absolution the sin leaves the penitent in the form of a devil, who dramatically flies off, obscuring the next person in the queue. This is the conventional iconography of the Reconciliation panel, but it is still most characterful. Today, the great majority of Anglicans no longer seek Reconciliation, but it is still the practice of most Catholics.
